Tip of the week - Between clubs, go with your tendency
When you're facing a shot that puts you in between clubs, the usual advice is to make a smooth swing with the longer club. I think that works for some players and not others. My own general rule is to go with your first impression, whether that was the long club or the short. Your instinct is usually your best friend. But when your instinct refuses to make a choice or tells you that you're smack between clubs, the best choice is the one that reflects your tendencies as a golfer and person. If you're what the psychologists call a Type A personality - a hard-driving, impatient sort, you should probably take the shorter club and give it the good aggressive whack you like to use. Tom Watson is this sort of player and he always goes to the shorter club. If, on the other hand, you're a milder Type B, more like Ben Crenshaw, with a smooth swing, you'll usually do best with an unhurried pass with the longer club.

Winter League - A message from Steve Swindail
Hi all,
Right I thought I would cobble together a quick guide to the Winter League 2015/16 and as the first round is less than two weeks away I thought I had best do it now.
The winter league takes the format of a pairs better ball competition, there will be eight rounds that contribute to the overall league standings. The best five rounds from these eight competitions in terms of stableford points scored will be totaled to provide final standings. From this the top 16 pairs will be added into two knockout competitions.
Teams in positions one to eight will be in the Winter League Knockout. Teams in positions nine to 16 will be entered in the Paz Plate.
Please note that on each round we play it as a single betterball competition on the day as well as compiling the running total for the league. We do have teams that only play a couple of times so no obligation to play in all eight rounds.
Please note that due to the changes being introduced nationally for Better Ball competitions we have decided to go with 90% of playing handicap from the first round. This change from three quarters to 90% is imposed Nationally from Friday, 1 January so we thought it best to have one consistent format for the duration of the competition.
Another change for this year will be the introduction of "play by" dates for the knockout rounds. The play by date will be the Sunday advertised in the diary and I will reserve the tee slots as normal for these matches (unless advised that these matches were already played).
Both these decisions were taken by your competition committee and not arbitrary calls on my part (for a change), the "play by" dates change I hope will be welcomed. We will have to see how it goes but in previous years we have enforced a strict "play on this date" which was viewed as too restrictive, we still have that "play on this date" in the diaries and hopefully if things do get challenging in the knockout stages you sensible gentlemen can work it out amongst yourselves.
Moving to the dates (and these could be subject to change again):
First round - Sunday, 4 October 2015
Second round - Sunday, 18 October 2015
Third round - Sunday, 15 November 2015
Fourth round - Sunday, 29 November 2015
Fifth round - Sunday, 6 December 2015
Sixth round - Sunday, 10 January 2016
Seventh round - Sunday, 24 January 2016
Eighth round - Sunday, 31 January 2016
Quarter-finals play by date and extra comp - Sunday, 14 February 2016 (valentines chucky bogey)?
Semi-finals play by date and extra comp - Sunday, 21 February 2016
Winter league final and play by date Sunday, 28 February 2016
The Winter League really is a popular competition, it's one of the major benefits of being at a club like Wychwood. We get to play on proper tees and greens all winter long, we also run a number of other competitions across the winter with a variety of team and singles competitions (I love the debate and input when I run a singles competition in January - it's a qualifier, I am in charge).
We look forward to seeing you all chaps, and again feel free to use the forum or contact me if you are looking for a partner (I may have played cupid for a Dale/Rowan love in today).
Cheers, Swinny!
