Captain's Drive-In
The weather didn’t stop us this Sunday and we managed to play the first weekend competition in my short time here, the Captains Drive-in. The sun came out on Saturday and stayed with us all day Sunday and allowed the Captain, Lady Captain and the Seniors Captain to all drive into office.
It was a great day. My first experience at the club and what an enjoyable event it was. The day started with everybody predicting where all the Captains Drives would finish. This was done by everybody writing their name on a lollypop stick and placing it in the ground somewhere down the first. Some members were more, let’s say, optimistic than others! Put it this way you could tell who the Captains mates were! Despite the nerves, the three all smacked off and proceedings were underway. There was a shotgun start and 98 golfers took part in a 4BBB stableford competition. Nearly all battled round the 18 and when everybody finished their round it was back into the clubhouse for a meal and prize giving presentation.
The best score of the day was by Eddie Stirling and his partner Stewart Brown, they came in with 44 points. That gave them a two-shot win from Des McWilliams and Gregg Magenheimmer who finished on 42 points.
It was a great opportunity and introduction for me to meet all the members. There's a great spirit around the club and this was certainly shown on Sunday. If the Drive-In was a reflection on how the year will go, then it’s going to be brilliant!
